Interior and Exterior Wayfinding

The Cincinnati Art Museum was long overdue for a refresh of their wayfinding. Beginning with concerns over the presence of the museum brand on outside of the building, as well as aging signs during a blockbuster show, Van Gogh: Into the Undergrowth, an exterior wayfinding system was devised. After doing extensive research into the current systems, a bridge between the current museum branding and newly updated donor signs was agreed upon. Signage continued to be updated as construction projects progressed with the completion of Art Climb, an accessible ramp to the front door, parking lot, and new front drive. As the outside signage was refreshed, it became clear that the interior needed an upgrade as well. Main concerns for the interior wayfinding was supporting the visitor in the ability to self navigate and tour. Which included making: elevators easier to find and identify the corresponding floors they traveled to; restrooms identifiable without gallery attendant intervention; and the gallery numbers upfront and include braille to meet and exceed ada guidelines. Future expansion will include a new map to help orient visitors in a main thoroughfare.
