In 2019, the museum began talks of a massive overhaul of their Ancient Middle East, South Asian, and Islamic art galleries. At the center of the expansive Ancient Middle east gallery would be an innovative installation of an ancient shrine. The curator’s vision was one that held the stones in their suspected original location. Surrounding the stones would need to be a visual representation of the remaining elements of the historic shrine. Wanting the elements to have a presence without overwhelming the artwork, a three-dimensional application was desired. Working with smaller, non-profit budget a solution of laser cut 1/2” acrylic applied directly to the wall to minimize shadows was agreed upon. The initial desire was for metal, but budget pushed to a painted acrylic that upon first look resembled metal. In addition to this feature wall, didactics were designed throughout to hold both the curatorial storytelling and accessibility at the forefront.
